Bill and Melinda

Joachim Müller-Jung meets Bill and Melinda Gates during their tour in South Africa. In the interview for FAZ (21.7.2006) Bill and Melinda explained their motivation to spend their private money to combat Aids, malaria and tuberculosis, how they explain the world's health and poverty problems to their children and the timescale of their initiatives. In 20 years they hope of having helped to develop a vaccine against Aids. But the billion-dollar heavy budget of their foundation also supports intermediate steps. Müller-Jung is that fascinated of Bill's philanthropy that he heads his interview "We Need More Rich People". Pretty neat is Bill's quote that it's an advantage to start early with these projects, when you still feel young. In contrast to politics, Bill takes the long term challenge.

In Spain Aids is Often to Late Diagnosed

Experts are very concerned because the number of Aids diagnoses is increasing since 16 years in Spain. And even worse: 40 percent of the diagnoses in 2004 came late, writes J.C. Ambrojo in EL PAÍS (4.4.2006). Late means that the infection is already very advanced. This has two grave consequences: with this, one deprives the HIV carrier from a treatment, that may be beneficial and contributes to the expansion of the virus in the community of that person. It's estimated that in Spain 30,000 persons don't know they are infected with Aids. (by K. Burger)
